Edris Tamano Time and again, I say Maranao is a misnomer. In our etymology, Ma-, Me-, or M- never point to a populace of a place. It is I- (equivalent to Taga in Pilipino), say Iranaon from Ranao, Ibatan from Batan (pl. in Sp.=Batanes). Edris Tamano Yes, MANGADAY is mga dayo ( female friends) but since it lost its meaning to modern Iranaon, it gained a generic 'unisex' usage. For the male, MANGALAYOK is used. Later on, the fair sex used KUWATA (from Arabic AKHAWAT; reversed in literation). The male sex used ARI or ARE (from Hispanic Kumpare=con padre, derived Padre, meaning Father). Edris Tamano I recall that the Iranaon male uses AKI (from Arabic AKHI=brother). Now, Iranaons called their older sisters and brothers MANONG and MANANG (fro Spanish Hermano and Hermana). They also used TITA and TITO but the more conservative one uses ATE (from Arabic OKHTI=my sister). AMA is father (from Arabic 'AMMA=paternal uncle in the genetive form; 'AMMO is nominative).

I'm concern about the transliteration above particularly on the spelling. Meranaw dialect is one of the richest in the world and hence it deserves what it due. The word "manglngklng" is understod among Meranaws but the way is is spelled could bring confusion not only to the non-Meranaws but to the Meranaws as well.

For as long as my little knowledge is concerned, here is my explanation:

When you spell "manglngklng" this way, it means that "forehead" in Meranaw should be spelled this way, "bnng" which is I think very difficult for others to understand. Since the word "b" and "n" are stressed or sounded when pronounced, there should be the letter "e" (stressed vowel sound) which represents the stressed sound ans should be put right after the stressed consonants sounds. This way, forehead in Meranaw can now be spelled as "beneng" (reads: b'n'ng). So, the word "manglngklng" could now be correctly spelled as "mangelengkeleng" (read: mang'l'ngk'l'ng) instead.

Sounds confusing really but I hope I made it clear...
