A good Moro is a dead Moro

I thought that the easiest part of the Kini.Kini.Revolution, my naive idea of social change movement within the Bangsa, is the issue about the name MORO because it does not require financial resources or sacrifice of human lives and there's no need for Pakbol and Pokndar to rally in Banggolo to support it. It only requires a small dose of self-respect or maratabat and re-imaging of the brain, ie. learning a little bit of history... and I am not even talking about ancient history.

 

I thought, we could all live to see the day when the name MORO disappear from the Filipino vocabulary. Boy, was I totally wrong! Many of us have become stubbornly MORO, while some have become arrogantly MORO. 

Even decent Filipino Indios don't use that name, at least officially, that's why our autonomous region is called Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao NOT Autonomous Region for the MOROs, and there is that Office of Muslim Affairs. There is not a single government office I know, that has the name MORO. 

Filipino Indios are probably scratching their heads or banging them against bamboo walls -- they can't understand what has become of the MOROs. You call them names and they say awesome! There ain't no way to beat 'em, MOROs! If that's the new definition of Bangsa bravery, I'm out. Bravery can not be combined with idiocracy.

 

A Malignant Tumor

The name MORO is like a malignant tumor. It has infected many of our people and they are incurable. Would it lead to the death of the Bangsa? Thats what it looks like. A new Bangsa is shaping up. One without maratabat. No sense of history. No self-respect.

 

- Forget that many of our elders died defending our honor. They went "huramentado" when they were called MOROs. 

 

When I was a child, we would beat up kids who called us MOROs or MOKLO. Even to this day, many of us are offended by the name. My late father, who was a Law cum laude and got his Master of Laws in United States super-hated the name. He would always say upon hearing bad news "kagiya aki a mimoromoros siran dn! (because they became and acted like real MOROs)". He knew what he was talking about so did one of the modern Iranaon heroes, Senator Ahmad Domocao Alonto. He told the House of Senate to stop calling us MOROs.

 

- Forget that Filipino Indios says "a good Moro is a dead Moro" and in Spanish, the cognate moro is considered a racist and derogative term. 

 

The Spaniards have a saying that goes like this, things are cool down here because there are no more Moros on the horizon (ie. the hated Moros were driven out of the land, back to North Africa).

 

 

- Forget that Juan de la Cruz who says 'Moros ngiyawa!" has never been to school. He has no idea that the dark-skinned Moors have ruled Spain for 800+ years therefore, he can not understand the basis of your definition for the glory of that name. But it really does not matter how you define the word. What matter is Juan de la Cruz's derogatory definition because he is the caller.

 

The MOROs Here, There and Everywhere, Inc. can't get into their heads that the Spaniards and the Filipino Indios did not call us MOROs out of love for our Bangsa! They insist that it was a lovey-dovey gift from the Spaniards and it was given in good faith.

 

The name did not even stick to the original "owners", the black North Africans. The Bangsa has become the sole frachise holder of the MORO brand name.

 

A Letter of Gratitude

Perhaps the Proud MOROs should send a letter of gratitude to Mother Spain. Something like this.

Nos hubiera sido un pueblo sin nombre, si Senior Magallanes no aterrizó en nuestras costas en 1521.

Maratabat is the foundation of the Bangsa. We lose it, we lose the Bangsa.

 

Are we so bankcrupt that we can't get a respectable name from our own? That we have to use foreign-given name, even if it was given in hate?

 

How about Proud Moklo! At least, its local.
