Edris TamanoOne Iranaon banter is "KOMAN SA KULIT". Kulit is the thin skin of a sweet potato (obi; awi is yam or ube) when steam-cooked. Koman is eater (from Spanish, COMER=to eat). Ayyydeee! (form of ayydaww=ouch;aray, aguy, Ind. Atuu) kuman sa kulit ah! Kulitem is a colloquial form of maitem=black. Mairem=blackish or moreno; MAILEM=fair; Magalimba=reddish brown=kayumanggi.

Edris TamanoKuman sa kulit must be a miser--walang ititira, walang itatapon; nilaklak lahat. Ayydee! Kumanta (kain tayo, tara!), vamos a comer; mangan ta na; mangan tila; mukaon 'ta; makaon ta, haw!(Tagalog, Spanish, Pampango, Pangasinensis, Cebuano, Ilongo...sounds inviting!) Baw, indi ko gale kag on-diet man gid ko.

Edris TamanoWhen did MORO got its negative meaning? When Tariq and his men crossed the strait separating Spain and Morocco (later called Jabal Tariq or mount Tariq, thus Gibraltar), Spain was put under the rule of the Muslims for 800 years. Of course, the vanquished called their conquerors as the enemies, the infidels, or any other name that was more than derisive. Upon encountering Muslims with turbans (turban from Turkish tulbend=tulips) in the archipelago, they called them Moros as they retreated to other natives they called Indios, whom they employed as they retaliated on a "Jues de Cucillo"(they took as a license to kill all moros"). When the so-called Moros retaliated against the Spaniards and the Indios, the vanquished again called them Moros to mean pirates.

Edris TamanoThe Mindanaoans continued their retaliations by raiding all the settlements in a mission called KAPANGAYAW which later acquired an adverse meaning: PIRACY. The dreaded MOROS became a byword in all the islands.

Edris TamanoIn those days, a considerable numbers of Filipinos were Muslims. They were the rulers of the islands. Of course, they were decimated in the horrible fashion of the Inquisition. They worship Allah. Bathala is a corruption of Baitullah through the passage of time. Ala ey! is Wallahi (by God=swearing). Ala ka! Yari ka! (Allah will lay His wrath on you=a warning). Agham is from Ahkam (system). Aklat (thoughts or philiosophy), maalam (used in southern Tagalog region) learned.

Edris TamanoDon't be surprised if you'll realize later that Tagalog is a cadet branch--a dialect--of the Iranaon (Maranao) language. The latter is an ancient advanced language of Sanskrit. The Darangen is an ancient Vedic epic. Tagalog literature is relatively new, newer than Visayan and very primitive. You don't compare the Torogan of the Sultan sa Taman Rooden and the Bahay Kubo.

Edris TamanoIf you will sing continuously--day and night (walang logtu)-- the Vedic epic, the Darangen, stopping only on calls of nature, you'll reach halfway on the second week. Where in the world can you find a similar one?

Edris TamanoPaulap lang 'yan. After the clouds, wala rin--as empty as the blue, blue sky. Take this as a homework: interpret it. "BADEN SAGAD SO KINTAY NA KAKAL SO PIMBASUKAN".

Edris TamanoTalking about Adta (must you be proud of it), this indigenous aborigine is said to be "Phangangan sa Kakowak" (crow eater), the ancestor of our forbears. The raven, the crow with a bigger beak, happened to be the most intelligent among fowls. Will you be proud also of your intelligent-fowl eater ancestry? Haaaahahaha! Ha, Emm?

Excerpts from the Speech delivered by Sultan sa Ramain Alaoya Alonto, convention delegate representing Lanao at the Philippine Constitutional Convention on August 21, 1934

"I wish to bring to the attention of the Members of this Convention as representatives of the Filipino people that the Mohammedan Filipinos (Muslims) have been protesting against the name Moro. We do not like to be called Moros because when we are called Moros we feel that we are not considered as part of the Filipino people. You als know that the name Moro was given to us by the Spaniards because Morocco had been under the rule of Spain like Mindanao and Sulu. Therefore, I would like to tell the Members of this Convention that we prefer to be called Mohammedan Filipinos, and not Moros because if we are called Moros we will be considered as enemies, for the name "Moro" was given to us by the Spaniards because they failed to penetrate the Islands of Mindanao and Sulu. Another fallacious theory that I would like to invite your attention to is the impression that the Moros are warlike marauding criminals branded as Juramentados. That is not true, my friends. In the Islands of Mindanao and Sulu there are many Christian inhabitants and they can get along all right with the Mohammedan Filipinos. It is natural that even among brothers, there is a quarrel; so, how much more among people? I would like to call your attention to the fact that we expect much from the Members of this Constitutional Convention; that the customs and traditions of the Mohammedans are granted to them by the present government should not be ignored to them by the Members of this convention. Religion does not in any way bar us from joining one another, for anybody can profess any religion he wishes to. It is true that the men assembled in this historic hall are going to draft the Constitution for the future Philippine Republic and it is true that the Constitution to be drafted is not to last for only one year but for all ages; and upon us rests the serious responsibility to give to our beloved country an enduring constitutional foundation in this period of transition. The Constitution to be drafted must not only be for the satisfaction of a tribe or of a particular group of people but must be for the satisfaction of the while Filipino people."
